This story was told by my brother’s friend to my brother. My brother then told me this story and here’s how it goes.
He works in East Coast at one of the companies in Kelantan but his home town is in Penang. His girlfriend on the other hand, lives in Kedah so he would travel back to his home town in Penang every week and on the way back, he would stay overnight at his girlfriend’s house.
Every week when he would head back home, he always and always would choose the East And West road. It’s not very long drive, only 2 hours away. When come Thursday, he would pack up his shirts and put them in his car so that after work he could start his journey back home. Note that in Kelantan, Friday’s a public holiday.

A couple of years back me and 2 of my friends had to drive up to Ipoh on a Saturday night to deliver an urgent item for a Minister’s meeting. By the time we received the item from the supplier, it was already 9.30pm and by the time we made it to Ipoh it was already 12am. Thinking that its best we stayed overnight, my friend proceeded to book a room in Heritage Hotel.
The hotel was pretty fully booked that day as the Minister’s entourage also stayed at the same hotel. We were given an end room that was located at the end of a quiet corridor. We didn’t think much of it as by then all 3 of us were tired. Once we entered the room, I felt an uncomfortable feeling overcoming me. The room felt hot and stuffy but I didn’t mention any of this to my friends.
We went out for supper and then got back to the hotel to rest for the night. As there were 2 single beds, we joined both beds to make it a queen size bed. Me, being the hero, even though they say never sleep in the middle, chose to sleep in the middle. It was around 3-3.30am that I first heard strange noises. The first sound was of our cupboard doors sliding (they had sliding ones) and the second was of glasses being moved around and thirdly the tap being turned on.

Authors Note : Do you ever wonder why people usually burn offerings in front of their houses every year during the Hungry Ghost Festival? For further read, you can refer to one article I wrote before here. But did they tell you that once you start to burning offerings, that you should continue doing it every year and it has to be in a proper manner? Here’s a story about a lady who learnt it the hard way.
My friend just recently got married and moved into a new house together with her husband. This year, it was slightly different not only because it was a new environment, new family and new house to begin with. But it everything seemed new to her so it was no surprise when it came to Hungry Ghost Festival, that she had to learn to burn offerings in front of her house.
On that fateful day, she was rushing out for dinner and thought of following the yearly tradition that her mother had passed on to her and prepared the hell notes, candles and some sweets placed nicely in front of her house. After burning some hell notes, her husband rushed her to hurry up with the process for they have dinner that night and thinking that she is done, my friend left the pile of ashes.
