Night at Hong Kong

Author’s Note : This is actually a personal experience of mine. As much as I hate the thought of it being true, can someone please tell me that its just all in my head?

I recently just came back from my Hong Kong holidays and if anyone of you have been there before or gone through some research on going there for holidays, you’ll know that its not a cheap place to stay. Hong Kong hotels can charge an exorbitant price of RM300 a night even for just a 2-3 star hotel and since  me and my husband were planning to go there for quite sometime, we actually found an acquaintance who had a friend that rents her apartments to foreigners like us for a very good deal. The apartment was not only clean but it was right smack in the town and easily accessible with restaurants just downstairs. In fact, it was pretty creative of the landlord to divide the small apartment which has 3 rooms into 2 different units. One unit has just a room with an attached bathroom whereas the other  unit has 2 rooms with a sharing bathroom, living room, kitchen etc just like any other apartment.

Anyway, back to the main point. It happened on our second night there.

I felt fast asleep as soon as I hit the pillows for it was a long day. But it wasn’t long before I was awaken by some noise. I was sleeping next to the table where the telephone was placed so when I heard the ringing sound of the telephone, I was immediately alert. The ringing was a good few seconds and of course, I was quite surprised who would it be ringing in the middle of the night. I was aware that the time was about 3am in the morning because there was a clock hanging on the wall facing us so it was pretty easy to spot the time and because the room was really small, you could see the time even in the dark.

My instincts told me not to pick it up. Perhaps it was because of too much movie but my husband urged me to pick the phone. I was a little blurry at that moment so I picked it up without any argument.  Half hoping to hear someone saying sorry for dialing the wrong number, I was also half hoping that I’ll hear nothing at all. Luckily enough for me, I only heard beeping sounds. Immediately I slam the phone down but right after I put down the phone, the ringing started again. I’m not so sure why but again I picked up the call. I was half anticipating some evil laughing sound coming out but like I say, I was either lucky, too wild imagination or I’ve been having too much spookycorner the past couple of years, I could only hear beeping sounds. I immediately put the phone down and told my husband that there was nothing and although I was already awakened by the commotion, I quickly feel asleep again. Perhaps it was my subconscious telling me that nothing could ruin this holiday that I have been looking forward to for the past 1 year so nothing happened after that weird night.

After coming back from Hong Kong safe in our own home sweet home, my husband asked me if I could feel anything funny in that apartment. You see, he always had a sensitive side of him towards these stuff. Probably its because of too much movies or reality tv shows from Taiwan or just another spooky part of him but I told him, I did not have any funny feelings. So he asked if I could remember what happened on our second night there. Remembering vaguely what had happened, I had put that incident behind me and enjoyed my holidays. That is, right until then. I slowly recall some phone ringing in the middle of the night and that was when my husband told me his side of the story.

My husband, that night, suddenly woke up finding himself hard to fall asleep again. Out of some funny reason, he suddenly thought of the phone ringing. And the phone rang! Immediately, he asked me to pick up the phone. When I put down the phone and it rang again, he suddenly had the instinct to pray. He silently thought to himself to whomever that was that we were only there to stay for a few night which after that we will be gone. He also silently apologized for intruding and just as he said his sorries, the phone which was ringing for the 3rd time stopped before I could pick it up again.

After the silent “talk”, we did not have any weird calls coming from the phone anymore. So tell me, what exactly happened?
